Course Overview

Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) represents a complete source of pre-hospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach pre-hospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course with case-based lectures, live action video, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios.
The PEPP lectures cover the most important points that need to be emphasized through the use of case studies. All of the lectures for both the BLS and ALS courses are found in the Resource Manual and PowerPoint presentations.

  • Children with Special Healthcare Needs

  • Medical Emergencies
  • Child Maltreatment

  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Apparent Life-Threatening Event (ALTE) (optional)

Live Action Video


Containing real-life footage from the field, emergency departments, and operating rooms, this video will captivate students and show them step-by-step procedures for assessing and treating pediatric patients.
The PEPP video illustrates every hands-on skill that students learn by reading the Student Manual and listening to the case-based lectures. This means that faculty will not need to demonstrate skills prior to the Skill Station portions of the PEPP Course.

Hands-On Skill Stations


The PEPP Skill Stations are an important part of helping students practice the hands-on aspects of what they have learned by reading the Student Manual, listening to the lectures, and watching the PEPP video.
Skill Stations give students an opportunity to handle the equipment, to size the equipments, and to perform the skill under direct supervision. There are two ALS and BLS Skill Stations. Each skill will have been demonstrated in the PEPP video and discussed in the lecture.

Small Group Scenarios


The scenarios will help students apply information from all aspects of the PEPP Course, reading the Student Manual, listening to the lectures, watching the PEPP video, and practicing the hands-on skills.
The faculty will present a scenario and the students must work together to assess and manage the child appropriately.

Each faculty member will be provided with:
  • assessment information
  • how the case develops
  • core knowledge points to be discussed
  • questions to help students understand the physiology of the child's condition
  • case summary to emphasize the major teaching points
